Challenges in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Diagnosis of Degenerative Spinal Diseases for Computer-Aided Analysis and Surgical Decision Support

This article analyzes the main challenges in diagnosing degenerative spinal diseases using magnetic resonance imaging, with lumbar spinal stenosis as an example. Despite the high diagnostic value of the method, image interpretation remains subjective, depends on the physician's experience, and does not always correspond to the clinical presentation. Quantitative assessment methods are considered, particularly measurement of the cross-sectional area of the dural sac, which improves diagnostic objectivity but does not fully reflect the clinical manifestations of the disease. The need for computer image analysis and artificial intelligence systems to improve diagnostic accuracy and support surgical decision-making is substantiated.
