This article examines the role of the gut microbiota as a key modulator of the human immune system. Current understanding of the mechanisms by which microbiome imbalances (dysbiosis) can initiate or exacerbate autoimmune diseases is analyzed. Particular attention is paid to mechanisms such as impaired intestinal barrier function, molecular mimicry, modulation of T-cell differentiation, and the production of metabolites with immunoregulatory properties. The potential use of probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation as potential therapeutic strategies is discussed.
